The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has thrown its weight behind the proposed bill seeking to create reserved legislative seats for women across the country.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting held in the early hours of Friday, the governors expressed unanimous support for the constitutional amendment, urging members to actively lobby both federal and state lawmakers to ensure its swift passage.
The bill — now scheduled for consideration by the National Assembly — seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to establish special constituencies to be contested exclusively by women in both the National and State Houses of Assembly.
The initiative is aimed at temporarily boosting female political representation and bridging the gender gap in governance.
The governors described the proposal as a progressive step toward inclusive democracy, noting that women’s greater participation would strengthen policymaking and promote equitable development nationwide.
The forum also commended the Federal Government’s ongoing fiscal and monetary reforms, particularly the measures introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stabilize the economy and restore investor confidence.
In the communiqué, the governors reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate closely with federal authorities to ensure effective implementation of these economic policies.
They further reiterated their resolve to address Nigeria’s security challenges, pledging to intensify cooperation with the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies to counter emerging threats and enhance public safety across all states.
