Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ending weeks of speculation about his political future.
Mbah announced his defection in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, describing it as a “bold and necessary step” driven by his commitment to the continued growth and transformation of Enugu State.
“Today, after long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” he declared.
The governor explained that his decision was motivated by a desire to realign Enugu’s development agenda with the national political framework, noting that progress sometimes requires difficult choices.
“I joined the PDP with a clear vision to transform Enugu and reshape its political landscape. Today, I stand before you to announce a break from the past and a decision that will define the road ahead,” Mbah said.
He added that leadership occasionally demands “painful but necessary sacrifices” in pursuit of greater ideals, stressing that the move was not merely political but strategic for the state’s future.
“This is about our values, how we organize ourselves politically, and how we secure the future of our people and our shared project. There comes a time when every leader must make a bold choice to determine their destiny,” the governor stated.
Governor Mbah’s defection marks a significant political shift in Enugu, a state long considered a stronghold of the PDP since the return of democratic governance in 1999.
