Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has reiterated his administration’s determination to secure justice for the victims of the June 5, 2022, terrorist attack in Owo, emphasizing that security remains a top priority for the state.
He made the remarks at the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Akure, during the 15th Episcopal and 35th Priestly Ordination Anniversary of the Bishop of Ondo Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Jude Ayodeji Arogundade, where he was the special guest of honour.
Recalling the tragic attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, where terrorists armed with Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and rifles killed about 40 worshippers, the governor noted that dozens of survivors still bear the scars of the incident.
He further revealed that security agencies, through joint federal and state efforts, have arrested suspects linked to the attack, including Idris Omeiza, Al-Quasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar.
“We pray that the memories of the Owo victims be blessed forever. As we continue to seek justice for them, let us stand together against terror and all forms of criminality. In unity and love, we will find the strength to heal wounds, mend broken hearts, and ensure a safer Sunshine State”, the governor declared.
Aiyedatiwa also praised Bishop Arogundade as a beacon of hope and a symbol of peace, justice, and human dignity, highlighting his impactful pastoral leadership in Ondo State and beyond. He commended the Catholic Church for its pivotal role in advancing education, healthcare, and social development in the state.
Highlighting his administration’s efforts to bolster security, the governor disclosed that 75 high-grade Hilux vehicles equipped with modern security gadgets were recently procured to support security operatives. He added that the state also provides monthly logistics to security agencies.
“The combined effect of these efforts has positioned Ondo State as one of the safest in Nigeria. Residents go about their daily lives with a sense of security, and this has also attracted significant investment into the state”, he said.
Reflecting on his 35 years in priesthood and 15 years as Bishop of Ondo Diocese, Bishop Arogundade encouraged newly ordained priests to remain steadfast in their devotion to God and service to humanity.
