As droughts become more frequent and food imports surge, the government is turning to large-scale irrigation farming as a long-term solution. Plans are underway to gazette the vast Galana Kulalu scheme as a special economic zone, opening idle public land to private investors and fast-tracking agribusiness development.
The move targets mechanised farming and value addition as the country confronts a future in which rain-fed agriculture is no longer tenable.
