Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has appointed Francis Agbo, a former member of the House of Representatives, along with 22 others, as coordinators for the 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
The appointments, announced during an expanded caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Makurdi, are part of the governor’s strategy to deepen grassroots democracy and enhance citizens’ participation in governance.
Governor Alia said the coordinators would serve as the party’s key representatives at the local level, tasked with strengthening the APC’s presence, mobilizing new members, and ensuring effective communication between the government and the people.
“These coordinators must embody the values of our party and this administration,” Alia said. “They are to remain close to the grassroots, ensuring that government programmes and interventions reach the people they are meant for.”
He warned against the diversion of public resources, stressing that each coordinator would be held accountable for their stewardship.
The governor also urged them to work closely with local leaders and community stakeholders to boost participation in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise, adding that their roles were particularly vital as the general elections draw near.
In a bid to expand economic opportunities, Alia directed the coordinators to identify 200 artisans in each LGA for job placements and 800 youths interested in overseas vocational training.
He said those selected must obtain a medical fitness certificate from the Father Adasu University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi.
Governor Alia further expressed concern over the growing practice of bringing minor political disputes directly to his office in Makurdi. Going forward, he said, the newly appointed coordinators would handle such matters, while only critical or unresolved issues should be escalated to him.
He praised APC members across the state for their loyalty and cooperation, assuring them that his administration would remain fair, transparent, and committed to good governance.
“The APC stands for excellence and integrity,” Alia said. “We cannot afford to compromise on accountability and service delivery.”
