New data from Google Search trends reveals a significant shift in how Nigerian students are approaching their studies, with a growing dependence on Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for academic support.
As the new school year kicks off, searches combining “AI” and “studying” have surged by over 200% compared with 2024, reflecting rapidly evolving study habits across the country.
The rising interest forms part of a broader AI boom in Nigeria, where overall searches related to AI have grown by 60% over the past year. Students are leveraging AI across multiple subjects, with searches for “AI + Chemistry” up 50%, “AI + Maths” and “AI + Languages” each climbing 30%, and “AI + Grammar” growing by 20%.
The search data shows that students are increasingly seeking practical support. Popular queries included:
-
“What is the best AI in the world for solving mathematical problems”
-
“How to use AI to solve math problems”
-
“AI tutor for students”
-
“Free AI tools for studying”
-
“Useful AI prompts for studying”
However, the interest isn’t limited to homework help. Nigerian students are also eager to understand AI itself. Searches for “how to use AI” and “what is the full meaning of AI” rose by 80%, while queries like “who is the father of AI” increased by 70%. Intriguingly, searches for “AI detection” spiked by a massive 290%, indicating growing awareness of academic integrity and AI’s ethical implications. Searches for “Generative AI” also saw a notable rise, often linked to queries about professional certifications and career opportunities.
West Africa Director at Google, Olumide Balogun, described the findings as “inspiring,” saying, “It’s exciting to see Nigerian students embracing AI to support their learning journeys”.
According to him, “This back-to-school season, the data shows that students are not just using AI to get quick answers, but as a tool to deepen their understanding of complex subjects, from chemistry to mathematics.
“This curiosity is essential in fostering a new generation of innovators, and we remain committed to providing tools and resources that empower them to learn, grow, and succeed”, he added.
Experts say with AI becoming a study partner, Nigerian students are shaping a new learning culture, one where digital tools enhance knowledge, creativity, and academic performance.
