A partnership between Glovo Uganda and the Haba Na Haba food bank has led to the rescue and distribution of 2,712,061 meals to food-insecure communities across Uganda since March 2024.
The initiative combines Glovo’s food delivery technology with Haba Na Haba’s food rescue model to reduce wastage and expand access to meals for vulnerable households. Using Glovo’s extensive courier network, surplus food collected from markets is delivered to families the same day, ensuring freshness and minimising waste.
Ivy Maingi, general manager of Glovo Uganda, said the milestone underscores the company’s dedication to social impact.
“Glovo surpassing 2.7 million meals is not just a number, it represents our commitment to the communities we operate in and showcases how tech can be a powerful force for social good,” Maingi said.
Since the partnership began, Glovo and Haba Na Haba have recorded exponential growth in their operations. What started with just nine distribution routes has now expanded to 27 active routes, reaching thousands of beneficiaries across Kampala and surrounding districts.
Jessica Bagenda, co-founder of Haba Na Haba, said the achievement demonstrates the power of collaboration in tackling hunger.
“This achievement is a testament to the power of collaboration. The support from Glovo has been a game changer, allowing us to more than triple our reach and ensure that good food nourishes people instead of ending up in landfills,” Bagenda noted.
“Every meal represents a family supported and a step towards a more sustainable future. However, the need is still great and with more volunteers, we can rescue and distribute even more food to our communities.”
Despite the impressive progress, both partners acknowledge that much more can be done. Haba Na Haba reports that surplus food in markets often exceeds what its current volunteer network can manage.
