The German government is set to order 424 new wheeled armoured vehicles worth nearly €7 billion ($8.11 billion), according to finance ministry documents as obtained. The lower house of parliament’s budget committee is expected to approve the arms deal for the Bundeswehr (German army) within days.
The deal includes a framework agreement with defense group General Dynamics to develop and procure 274 scout vehicles at a cost of approximately €3.5 billion. Deliveries for these vehicles are planned to begin in 2028.
In addition, Germany will procure 150 “Schakal” wheeled armoured infantry fighting vehicles for around €3.4 billion. The contract for these vehicles will be awarded through the European defense procurement agency OCCAR to Artec GmbH, a joint venture between defense firms KNDS and Rheinmetall. Deliveries of the Schakal vehicles are scheduled between 2027 and 2031.
The agreement also includes an option to purchase up to 82 additional scout vehicles from General Dynamics, potentially increasing the first order to 356 vehicles with a value up to €4.6 billion. Likewise, the Schakal procurement could expand with an option for up to 200 more vehicles in the future.
This major modernisation effort underscores Germany’s commitment to upgrading its military capabilities amid evolving security challenges.
