Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has condemned a viral social media post advising Igbo men to avoid marrying women from their own ethnic group.
The controversial message, shared by an X user, urged Igbo men to “look outside” Nigeria, particularly to East Africa, when choosing a spouse. The user claimed this would prevent situations where a wife allegedly levels false accusations of sexual misconduct involving their daughter.
Nnaji, who hails from Mbaise in Imo State, swiftly rejected the narrative. In a pointed response, she accused the poster of encouraging men to evade self-reflection and accountability.
According to her, the argument implied that instead of addressing harmful behavior, some men would rather seek “unsuspecting” women elsewhere while continuing the same conduct.
The exchange drew mixed reactions online, with some users insisting the original post was aimed at condemning false accusations rather than attacking Igbo women broadly. But Nnaji maintained that the message reinforced destructive stereotypes.
She added that just as women cannot always distinguish abusive men from good ones, men should not generalize or stigmatize an entire group of women based on isolated cases.
Nnaji’s comments have since reignited conversations about gender bias, cultural stereotypes, and accountability within relationships.
