Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, says both Manchester City and Liverpool remain strong challengers to Arsenal in this season’s Premier League title race.
Neville shared his assessment during a televised interview after watching Manchester City dismantle Liverpool 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring with a trademark header before Nico Gonzalez doubled City’s lead through a deflected strike. Jeremy Doku sealed the win with a brilliant curler from distance.
The defeat was Liverpool’s fifth in 11 league matches, dropping them to eighth place and eight points behind leaders Arsenal. City, meanwhile, sit four points off the top.
Neville admitted he initially doubted City’s consistency this season, but said their latest performance has forced him to reconsider.
“I thought the biggest challenger to title favourites Arsenal would be Liverpool. I thought Man City were too inconsistent, but it looks like I was badly wrong,” Neville said.
“They’ve still got to convince me that they’re going to win the title – Arsenal are the better team – but they’re the one team and the one manager you wouldn’t want on your shoulder going down the home straight.”
Asked if Liverpool can still mount a title challenge, Neville refused to rule them out.
“I’m going to say yes. If it clicked, something could happen. They’ve got firecrackers and world-class players in that dressing room.”
