Galatasaray midfielder Mario Lemina has shared his emotions following Gabon’s heavy 4-1 defeat to the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff encounter in Rabat, Morocco.
Lemina, who came up against his club teammate Victor Osimhen, admitted that the loss was difficult to take, noting that the Panthers must build on the experience despite the painful outcome.
Osimhen was instrumental in Nigeria’s win, scoring twice in extra time after the game had ended 1-1 in regulation time. Gabon had forced the match into extra time with an 89th-minute equaliser from Mario Lemina himself, which cancelled out Sevilla forward Akor Adams’ opener for Nigeria.
Substitute Chidera Ejuke restored the Super Eagles’ lead early in extra time before Osimhen struck twice to seal a commanding victory for the West Africans.
Sharing his thoughts on his official X account, Lemina expressed a mix of emotions, highlighting both his frustration and pride in his team’s effort. He wrote:
“A mix of emotions between rage, disappointment, and pride. We had promised ourselves to fight to the end for this jersey, but it wasn’t enough.
“Let’s use this experience to progress and move forward stronger toward our goals. Proud of you guys. Thank you,” he posted.
The result means Nigeria will now face DR Congo on Sunday at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in the final phase of the 2026 World Cup intercontinental playoff qualifiers.
