Authorities in Gabon have confirmed ongoing discussions with major technology firms following the continued suspension of several popular social media platforms in the country.
According to the communications ministry, talks are underway with Meta and TikTok as officials work to address concerns that prompted the temporary restriction. The platforms were blocked after the national media regulator announced on February 17 that access would be suspended “until further notice”, citing worries over online content believed to be fuelling tension and division.
Since the restriction, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram have remained inaccessible, while WhatsApp services have fluctuated depending on network providers. Local reports indicate that TikTok reached out to regulators shortly after the announcement, expressing support for efforts to maintain a safe online environment that respects users’ rights and dignity.
Government officials have defended the decision, saying repeated warnings had been issued over the past year and a half regarding certain online publications. They argue that the measures were taken after concerns about content considered defamatory, as well as material described as violent or inappropriate.
However, the suspension has drawn criticism from opposition figures. Former prime minister, Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, described the move as excessive and inconsistent with constitutional principles.
Meanwhile, presidential officials have clarified that the restriction is not intended to be permanent. They say the suspension is part of broader efforts to strengthen digital regulation and ensure responsible online activity in the interest of the public.
