Multi-award-winning actress and producer Funke Akindele has rewritten Nollywood history with her latest film, Behind The Scenes, which has emerged as the highest-grossing Nigerian movie of 2025 after earning ₦2.103 billion within its first month in cinemas.
Distributed by FilmOne Entertainment, the film recorded an extraordinary opening run, breaking five box office records in its opening weekend alone. Among the milestones was the highest single-day gross on Boxing Day, when the movie earned ₦129.5 million.
Reacting to the latest figures, FilmOne announced that Behind The Scenes has crossed the ₦2 billion mark, making it the first Nollywood film to achieve the feat in Africa. The distributor also confirmed that the movie is now the highest-grossing Nollywood title of all time across Africa, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.
The record-breaking performance further places Akindele at the top of the industry, as she becomes the first filmmaker to rank number one at the African box office for three consecutive years. It also marks her third film to surpass the ₦1 billion milestone, reinforcing her status as one of Nollywood’s most commercially successful creatives.
Industry observers attribute the film’s success to a combination of factors, including strong pre-release buzz from its advanced screening, a relatable storyline, and a star-studded cast. The movie explores themes of family, loyalty, and societal pressure, resonating strongly with cinema audiences.
The ensemble cast features performances from Scarlet Gomez, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, and Uche Montana, all of whom delivered roles that contributed to the film’s wide appeal.
Expressing her appreciation, Akindele thanked her fans for their unwavering support, describing the achievement as deeply humbling. She credited the milestone to God and to audiences who have continued to show up for her work, while reaffirming her commitment to growing the Funke Akindele Network brand.
With Behind The Scenes, Funke Akindele has once again strengthened her legacy as a dominant creative force and a defining figure in Nollywood’s box office evolution.
