Popular Nigerian filmmaker and actress Funke Akindele has spoken about the personal sacrifices she made while developing the widely successful Jenifa franchise.
The Nollywood star said she withdrew from social activities for an extended period to concentrate on the project, dedicating nearly two years to building the brand.
Akindele shared the experience while speaking at the International Women’s Day event organised by Wema Bank. She explained that the demanding nature of the work required her full attention, prompting her to take on several roles in the production process.
According to the actress, she was deeply involved in writing, producing, directing, and acting in the series while also overseeing various departments to ensure the project met her creative vision.
She revealed that during that period she largely distanced herself from social gatherings, a decision that drew criticism from some colleagues who did not fully understand the extent of her commitment.
Akindele said she spent long stretches working from her residence in Amen Estate, where she focused on developing scripts and supervising production plans aimed at strengthening the Jenifa brand.
Reflecting on the journey, the award-winning filmmaker noted that the success many people see today came at a significant personal cost. She explained that staying committed to her goals often meant pushing through fatigue and ignoring distractions.
She also acknowledged that criticism was part of the process, noting that she had to remain resilient when certain aspects of the production faced negative reactions.
Despite the challenges, Akindele said the experience helped her grow professionally and contributed to the achievements she enjoys today.
Her remarks have resonated with many aspiring creatives, highlighting the level of discipline and dedication required to succeed in the Nigerian film industry.
