Following the motor accident involving boxing champion Anthony Joshua on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has blamed reckless driving, including speeding and wrongful overtaking, for the incident.
The crash occurred around noon near the Sinoma area of Sagamu, Ogun State, involving a Lexus Jeep conveying Joshua and a stationary commercial truck. Two people lost their lives, one person sustained injuries, while Joshua escaped with minor injuries.
Confirming the incident, the FRSC said its operatives arrived at the scene within minutes of receiving the report, enabling swift rescue operations and traffic control.
Speaking on the crash, the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said preliminary findings pointed to dangerous driving.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit and lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre, crashing into a stationary truck properly parked by the roadside”, Ogungbemide said.
He added that “excessive speed and wrongful overtaking remain serious traffic violations and among the leading causes of fatal crashes on Nigerian highways.”
According to reports, the injured victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at a morgue in Sagamu.
