The Corps mandates immediate compliance as part of President Tinubu’s push to modernize Nigeria’s road network.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued a nationwide order requiring all construction companies working on roads to install clear, updated road signage at every construction site to protect motorists.
The directive, announced Monday, aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing road infrastructure overhaul, which involves extensive construction and rehabilitation projects across the country.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed emphasized that the order is meant to safeguard motorists navigating construction zones. “Companies must install, maintain, and continuously update proper road signage at every active or inactive construction site without exception,” Mohammed said in a statement issued by FRSC spokesperson Olusegun Ogungbemide.
The Corps Marshal also instructed all FRSC Commanding Officers to enforce the order strictly and effectively, warning that contractors who fail to meet approved safety standards will face decisive regulatory actions.
Mohammed condemned a recurring issue in Nigeria, where some construction firms neglect proper warning signs, diversion indicators, and safety measures, putting road users at serious risk. “This directive is final and enforceable,” he stressed, noting that FRSC field commands will intensify supervision to ensure compliance.
The FRSC has long highlighted concerns about inadequate and inconsistent signage at construction and maintenance sites. Since 2010, officials have warned that missing or defaced signs turn construction zones into accident-prone areas, with issues including poor diversions, illegal U-turns, potholes, and unlit roadworks.
In previous efforts, the FRSC introduced a Standard Road Signage Code and even set up a signage production facility in Gwagwalada, FCT, to ensure uniformity and compliance. However, many construction companies have continued to ignore these requirements, contributing to accidents at diversion points and work zones.
Mohammed reiterated the Corps’ commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure that government investments in road infrastructure lead to safer journeys for all Nigerians.
“We are determined to ensure that the Federal Government’s investment in road infrastructure results in safer, more secure travel for every road user,” he concluded.
