The government of France has condemned recent military strikes linked to Iran following escalating retaliatory attacks involving the United States and Israel, while also renewing calls for the release of French nationals detained in Iran.
France’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noel Barrot, held discussions with his Iranian counterpart on Wednesday, emphasising France’s commitment to stability in the Middle East and urging all parties to pursue de-escalation.
According to a statement released by the French Foreign Affairs Ministry on Thursday, Barrot reiterated France’s support for “demanding diplomatic dialogue conducted in accordance with international law, where the use of force must remain strictly regulated.”
The minister also expressed continued concern over the situation of French citizens currently detained in Iran, calling for their immediate and unconditional release.
Among those detained are Cécile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who were held for more than three years on espionage-related charges before being released from prison in November and transferred to the French Residence in Tehran.
Barrot said French authorities remain fully mobilised to secure their permanent freedom and ensure their safe return home.
Earlier in the week, the families of Kohler and Paris expressed alarm over their safety following bombings reported near the French embassy, describing their concerns as heightened amid the ongoing military tensions.
