At least four students of St Peter’s Naalya Secondary School (SPENA) were injured in a road accident that occurred in Nakasongola district along the Kampala–Gulu highway.
The accident happened at around 9:30am on Sunday at Kakindu village in Wabinyonyi sub-county. The injured students have been identified as Christabella Awori, Claudia Namukisa, Margaret Atwine and Prudence Tumugabirwe.
According to Savannah regional police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima, the students were injured when the school coaster, registration number UBQ 073H, collided with a fuel tanker, UBQ 935Y, and a white Toyota Hiace ambulance, registration number UBK 257F.
Twiineamazima explained that the driver of the school coaster, which was coming from the Gulu side and followed by the ambulance, attempted to overtake a trailer but drifted into the opposite lane, leading to a head-on collision with the fuel tanker.
Police officers from Nakasongola responded to the scene and transported the injured students to health facilities in Kampala for treatment.
The fuel tanker, UBQ 935Y, remains at the scene awaiting offloading of its fuel before it can be towed, while the damaged vehicles, the Toyota Hiace ambulance and the school coaster, were taken to Katuugo police station.
Twiineamazima said preliminary investigations point to careless overtaking as the likely cause of the crash, although inquiries are still ongoing.
“Motorists are urged to exercise caution, especially before overtaking manoeuvres on busy highways, and to adhere to speed limits and road signs,” Twiineamazima said.
