A machete-wielding assailant, today, Thursday, attacked Ggaba Early Childhood Development School in Kabuuma Zone, killing four children in an incident that has shocked residents near Lake Victoria.
Preliminary reports indicate that the suspect had allegedly been involved in another killing in the same area shortly before the attack on the school. Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed the incident, saying police responded to the scene but details regarding the suspect’s motive and mental state were still unclear.
According to eyewitnesses, the attacker reportedly posed as a parent seeking to register a child, which allowed him access to the school premises.
“The suspect entered the school and told teachers he had come to register a child. Shortly after leaving the office, he went to the playground where children were playing on the seesaw,” an eyewitness said.
“He then pulled out a machete and attacked the children.”
Witnesses said the assailant was subdued by a security guard while chasing a fifth child. Security personnel later fired bullets and tear gas to disperse angry residents who attempted to lynch the suspect.
Kawala confirmed that the suspect is in police custody and said Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba was expected to visit the scene as investigations continue.
