Former Bayelsa State governor and serving senator, Seriake Dickson, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a newly registered political party.
Speaking during a world press conference, Dickson described himself as a “man of conviction,” expressing deep concern over what he called the declining state of the PDP.
According to him, the party is currently “sick and in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),” struggling to function effectively as a viable opposition platform.
The senator accused some PDP governors of undermining the party by aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a development he said has worsened the party’s internal crisis and weakened its role as a credible opposition force.
Dickson warned that Nigeria risks drifting toward a one-party state if strong opposition voices continue to diminish.
He explained that these concerns prompted him to seek a new political path through the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a political party recently registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, the decision to defect was driven by the need to pursue his political future on a platform that better reflects his present convictions and aspirations.
Following his announcement, the leadership of the NDC formally received Dickson into the party. In a symbolic gesture, he was presented with the party’s official flag and issued membership card number “001,” signifying his status among the founding members of the party.
A prominent figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, Dickson served as Governor of Bayelsa State from 2012 to 2020 before winning election to the Senate in 2023 under the platform of the PDP.
