Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff and Ambassador to Benin Republic, Lt.-General Tukur Buratai (rtd), has dismissed claims linking him to terrorism financing, describing them as entirely fabricated and baseless.”
In a statement issued on Saturday and signed on his behalf by former Army spokesperson Brig.-General Sani Kukasheka Usman, Buratai rejected the allegations, calling them “false, unfounded, and mischievous”, intended to tarnish his reputation.
“At no point during my distinguished military career have I been questioned, investigated, or linked in any way to terrorism financing,” the statement read. “These claims, propagated by unverified personal accounts, have no factual or legal basis and constitute a deliberate smear campaign.”
The statement emphasized that Buratai’s record spans over four decades of dedicated service, during which he led operations that significantly degraded Boko Haram and ISWAP, reclaimed territories, restored civil administration, and facilitated the return of displaced Nigerians.
“It is regrettable that such narratives continue to surface, yet each attempt has failed because my service remains transparent, honourable, and distinguished”, the statement added.
Buratai reiterated that the fight against terrorism requires integrity, patriotism, and commitment to truth, not the spread of falsehoods aimed at discrediting individuals who have devoted their lives to national security.
