Two Ugandan internationals, Melvyn Lorenzen and Timothy Awany, are facing contract termination threats from their foreign clubs if they choose to represent their country at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Lorenzen, who plays for Muangthong United in Thailand, and Awany, who features for Israeli Premier League side FC Ashdod, have reportedly been warned that they will be dismissed should they honour Uganda’s AFCON invitation.
The shocking development was revealed by the Cranes’ media officer, Paul Mukatabala, and has sparked widespread outrage among African football stakeholders.
FIFA regulations mandate that all clubs must release invited national team players at least one week before major international tournaments, including AFCON.
The 2025 AFCON will take place in Morocco from December 21, 2025 to January 18, 2026.
The Uganda Football Federation is expected to engage both clubs and FIFA as the situation continues to draw attention across the continent.
