Canada-based Nigerian Afrobeats singer Foluwasegun Sanni, popularly known as Folucious FC, has opened up about the realities of being an African artist in the diaspora, describing it as a “double struggle” that requires both authenticity and adaptability.
In an exclusive interview, the Afrofusion star explained that many diaspora artists face unique hurdles as they try to establish themselves on the global stage while staying true to their African roots.
“The Afrobeat sound is global now, but not every artist in the diaspora gets equal visibility,” Folucious FC said. “Back home, you’re sometimes seen as too foreign, while abroad, people don’t fully grasp the depth of where the music comes from. It’s a balancing act that takes consistency and real passion.”
The singer, whose style blends Afrobeats, hip-hop, and soul, noted that African artists abroad often contend with limited performance opportunities, high production costs, and a lack of label support.
Despite the challenges, Folucious FC remains optimistic about the digital era’s power to bridge the gap between continents.
“Technology has made it possible for us to reach fans in Lagos, Accra, London, or Toronto with just one post. Once the music is real, people will feel it anywhere,” he said.
Having spent his early years in Lagos before relocating to Canada, Folucious FC describes his sound as a fusion of “Lagos street grit and North American polish.” His upcoming project, expected later this year, will further explore this cross-cultural identity.
“My journey is about representing every African artist abroad trying to be heard,” he added. “We may be far from home, but Afrobeat lives in us. It’s our heartbeat.”
