The 2023 National Campaign Secretary, Folashade Aliu has confirmed ongoing consultations with Peter Obi following his recent meeting with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso in Kano, adding that a “very public decision” on a possible 2027 alliance is expected soon.
“Well, what I would like to share with you at this moment is that, of course, you know they are political friends over the years. A lot of consultations are going on, despite the INEC timetable. The former Labour presidential candidate had a discussion with my principal, and they both agreed that he should come and celebrate Sallah with him. That indicates so many things.
“If anything is happening, it will be announced, and everybody will know the direction of things. But at this moment, we keep our consultation open and going. We are probably going to make a very public decision very soon,” she revealed.
Addressing questions about a potential running mate, she said Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is focused on the broader interest of Nigerians, noting that any eventual alliance with Peter Obi would determine positions based on merit.
“Distinguished Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is not about himself; it’s about the people. Whoever chooses to come together will be in the best position to determine who is the right candidate for which position. But as a party, we are also of the interest that maybe we should look to the South”.
Aliu also noted that the choice of platform is still under consultation, emphasizing that the arrangement could involve one supporting the other.
“We are very strategic about the way forward. In terms of the platform, it is part of the consultation. It will be decided; it will be one or the other, or one supporting the other. It will be a good combination,” she reiterated.
Aliu also dismissed rival NNPP factions’ claims, saying suspensions and expulsions have already been legally upheld.
“My understanding of the case is that those people were suspended; some were expelled from the party. There is already a judgment that upheld their suspension,” she said.
She also dismissed the APC’s criticism, describing the gathering as genuine and grassroots-driven, reflecting strong support for the Kwankwoso’s movement rather than a staged event.
“It’s just a statement from somebody who is frustrated. They know that gathering is highly relevant. You look at that crowd; that is not a rented crowd. These are people that believe in the ideology of Kwankwaso. If someone says it’s not relevant, it’s because it shook them.”
Speaking on the purpose of the Kano visit, Aliu emphasized that it was a Sallah celebration.
“No, it’s just good to celebrate. Both of them are hard workers—smart workers. When you work hard and you work smart, you have to create time to celebrate,” she concluded.
