A mysterious fire on Wednesday morning gutted a factory in Abubor Nnewichi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State, destroying production machines, office equipment, and finished goods valued at billions of naira.
According to sources, the blaze began around 5:50 a.m., consuming items in the production process, finished products, and office assets. Residents said the fire caught them by surprise as most were still asleep.
A local resident, Obinna Okoye, said firefighters were quickly deployed to battle the inferno. “The fire service men are still trying to quench the fire. You know how inflammable pampers and tissue papers can be,” he explained.
Confirming the incident, Jeremiah Anwuobi, Commander of the Nnewi Zone Fire Service, said the fire had been brought under control. Anwuobi revealed that the office was alerted by 5:30 a.m. and immediately rushed to the scene. He also confirmed that no casualties were recorded, while the cause of the fire remains unknown.
Reacting to the incident, Chikelu Edwin, an internal auditor at the company, described it as a “mystery fire,” noting that there was no electricity supply in the section where the blaze reportedly started, adding to the perplexity surrounding the incident.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire as the affected company begins assessing the scale of losses.
