The Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein has been cleared by FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host next week’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
There had been doubts about the venue after concerns were raised over the stadium’s poor pitch condition. However, following fresh inspections, the two governing bodies issued a joint statement confirming the pitch had shown “encouraging progress” and was fit for use.
With the approval, Lesotho will also host their qualifier against fellow Southern African opponents at the stadium on Friday, September 5, as they lack a FIFA-standard venue. Four days later, Bafana Bafana will welcome Nigeria to Bloemfontein for a high-stakes matchday eight showdown on September 9.
South Africa currently lead the group with 13 points from six matches. Nigeria sit fourth on seven points, trailing Rwanda and Benin Republic who are second and third, respectively.
The Super Eagles must secure maximum points from back-to-back fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa to keep alive their chances of qualifying for a seventh World Cup finals.
