Minister urges stronger coordination across value chain at maiden NISO stakeholders’ engagement
Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu, says the federal government is intensifying efforts to expand transmission infrastructure and deepen commercialisation across Nigeria’s electricity sector.
Adelabu spoke in Abuja on Wednesday at the inaugural stakeholders’ engagement organised by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO). He said the government remains committed to building a reliable and secure national power system capable of meeting growing demand while also fostering a competitive electricity market that attracts investment and enhances efficiency.
“Efforts are ongoing to strengthen regulatory alignment between the central and subnational governments, expand transmission infrastructure, and improve sector commercialisation,” the minister said.
He added that the government is equally focused on ensuring a stable and sustainable power supply and supporting initiatives that enable states to develop their own electricity markets in line with existing laws.
Adelabu noted that the ministry will continue partnering with development institutions to support investments that boost system reliability, improve market liquidity, and accelerate the integration of renewable energy across the grid.
The minister called on all industry players to support NISO by complying with operational procedures, providing timely data, and participating actively in stakeholder engagements.
“This engagement provides us an opportunity to reinforce collaboration across the value chain,” he said.
He emphasised that system operators, generation companies, transmission and distribution firms, regulators, market participants, state governments and consumers all have a role to play.
“No single institution can deliver a stable and efficient power sector in isolation,” he added.
Adelabu said the sector’s progress depends on collective responsibility and consistent communication among stakeholders. He noted that recent developments in the industry underscore the importance of coordination and the federal government’s sustained commitment to deepening power sector reforms, attracting private capital, and unlocking the country’s vast renewable energy potential.
