The Federal Government has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat accident in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, which claimed at least 30 lives earlier this week.
Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a condolence message, commiserated with the families of the deceased, as well as the government and people of Niger State.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy,” Idris said. “The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will work closely with the Niger State Government to ensure prompt relief, assistance, and support for both survivors and the bereaved families.”
He lauded the Niger State Government and its State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) for their swift rescue operations, which ensured that all passengers aboard the ill-fated vessel were accounted for.
The Minister also underscored the importance of safety compliance on Nigeria’s inland waterways, urging passengers to always use life jackets and adhere to precautionary measures.
“No one should embark on a boat journey without appropriate safety gear. These precautions often make the difference between life and death,” he stressed.
Idris further revealed that the National Orientation Agency (NOA) has been directed to launch an intensive nationwide sensitisation campaign to raise public awareness on water transport safety.
The accident occurred on Tuesday when a wooden boat carrying 138 passengers capsized along the Shagunu–Dunga axis of Kainji Lake, leaving dozens dead and others injured.
