The Federal Government has approved the introduction of a GIS-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system designed to modernise Nigeria’s national addressing framework and improve location accuracy across the country.
The decision was announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Titan, who said the approval was granted by the Federal Executive Council under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu.
According to the minister, the new system will be developed in partnership with the Nigerian Postal Service to enhance mail delivery, improve logistics operations and support the country’s expanding digital economy.
He explained that the digital postcode framework will use geospatial technology to assign precise location identifiers to properties nationwide, enabling more efficient sorting, routing and service delivery.
Officials say the upgraded system is expected to strengthen emergency response services, improve national planning, support e-commerce platforms and enhance government service delivery by providing more reliable address data.
Nigeria has long operated a traditional numeric postal code system managed by the postal authority; however, gaps in street naming, house numbering and address mapping have limited its effectiveness in some urban and rapidly growing communities.
The new GIS-based approach aims to address these challenges by linking physical locations to accurate digital coordinates, making it easier for businesses, public institutions and logistics providers to locate addresses with greater precision.
Government officials describe the initiative as part of broader efforts to build foundational digital infrastructure that supports innovation, economic growth and improved public services nationwide.
