In a significant move to boost morale just hours before their 2025 AFCON opener, the Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled the promises made to the Super Eagles following their runner-up finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
On Monday night in Fès, Morocco, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Shehu Dikko, officially presented the title documents for housing units and plots of land to the players and coaching staff.
The rewards, originally pledged by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in February 2024, include a flat and a plot of land in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) for each member of the “Class of 2023.” Unlike previous decades where such promises often went unredeemed for years, Dikko confirmed that these allocations have been fully processed with Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) issued and ready for the players.
National Honours and Recognition
In addition to the real estate rewards, the players were formally recognized with national honours. While most members of the squad received the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), special considerations were made for veteran players:
- Ahmed Musa & Victor Osimhen: Awarded the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), as they both already held the MON title.
-
William Troost-Ekong: Conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in recognition of his performance as the 2023 AFCON Player of the Tournament.
“The fulfilment of these pledges brings closure to the long-awaited rewards and reaffirms the federal government’s commitment to recognizing sporting excellence,” Dikko stated. “We want the team to focus solely on the task at hand—bringing home a fourth title.”
