The Nigerian Federal Government has formally commended the Super Eagles for their valiant performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, reassuring the players of the nation’s unwavering support despite their semi-final departure.
In an official communiqué issued on Thursday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, lauded the squad for representing the country with exceptional dignity, pride, and tenacity on the continental stage. The government highlighted that the team’s journey in Morocco showcased the true spirit of Nigerian resilience, transcending the final scoreboard.
“Nigeria remains proud of you,” Idris remarked, emphasizing that the Super Eagles exhibited remarkable character, tactical discipline, and collective purpose even in the face of defeat. The Minister noted that the players’ conduct throughout the tournament perfectly mirrored the core values of the national flag, asserting that their dedication on the pitch earned them lasting respect from fans globally.
“Even in defeat, you showed character, teamwork and resilience, and those qualities matter deeply to the nation you represent,” the Minister stated. He further explained that the Super Eagles served as a powerful reminder that donning the iconic green and white jersey signifies unity and an indomitable will to persevere.
“You reminded us that wearing the green and white is about courage, unity and never giving up. Football has its highs and lows, but your effort and commitment throughout this tournament have earned the respect and gratitude of Nigerians at home and abroad,” he added.
Concluding his message, Idris encouraged the team to utilize this experience as a stepping stone for future success, urging the players to maintain their bond and return even stronger for upcoming international fixtures. “Hold your heads high, stay united and return stronger. Nigeria is grateful for the joy and hope you gave us during this competition, and the nation stands with you, always,” the Minister affirmed.
The Super Eagles’ pursuit of a fourth continental title ended in a dramatic 4–2 penalty shootout loss to host nation Morocco on Wednesday night. Following a scoreless 120 minutes at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, the encounter saw Morocco dominate the offensive statistics with 16 attempts compared to Nigeria’s two. Despite the pressure, a stellar performance from goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali kept Nigeria level against the Atlas Lions’ onslaught and their hero between the posts, Yassine Bounou. Although the Nigerian attack, led by Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, struggled to breach the hosts’ disciplined backline, the team’s defensive resolve took the match to the limit before the final shootout decided the finalist.
