Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), backed by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Monday staged a protest at the National Industrial Court in Abuja over unresolved labour issues, including unpaid promotion arrears and poor working conditions.
The workers, who are currently on a total and indefinite strike, carried placards demanding the payment of outstanding entitlements and improved welfare across FCTA departments. Some protesters also called for the removal of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, accusing the administration of failing to address workers’ grievances.
The NLC said the protest followed several engagements with the FCTA leadership that failed to yield meaningful outcomes. According to the union, workers were left with no option but to escalate the matter after months of complaints over delayed promotions, lack of adequate work tools, and what they described as worsening working conditions.
Labour leaders maintained that despite assurances from the FCTA that some demands had been met, key welfare issues — particularly the payment of accumulated arrears — remain unresolved.
The National Industrial Court has fixed January 26, 2026, to hear the matter and determine the legality of the ongoing strike, as well as possible steps toward resolving the dispute.
The disagreement has persisted for several months, heightening tension within the FCTA workforce and raising concerns over the impact of the strike on public service delivery in the Federal Capital Territory.
