A planned protest by labour unions in Abuja has come under scrutiny from the FCT Police Command, which has raised concerns about possible security threats.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had announced plans to hold a peaceful solidarity rally on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, with the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) listed as the convergence point.
In a statement issued on Monday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said the command respects the constitutional right to peaceful assembly but has received intelligence indicating the likelihood of infiltration by groups seeking to disrupt public order.
According to the police, the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, alongside other non-state actors, may attempt to hijack the protest for purposes considered inimical to public safety and security.
Adeh said the appeal for postponement was made in the interest of preventing a breakdown of law and order and protecting residents of the Federal Capital Territory. She urged the organisers to consider rescheduling the rally to a later date.
The planned protest is linked to an ongoing labour dispute in the FCT following an indefinite strike by area council workers over unpaid salaries and allowances. While the National Industrial Court has ordered workers to resume duties, the NLC and TUC have accused FCT authorities of intimidation.
