Three people have died and several others were injured after a tipper truck reportedly lost its brakes and collided with multiple vehicles at Powerline Junction, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the incident, noting that the crash involved the tipper truck, three tricycles (locally known as Marwa), a Toyota Corolla, and a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) bus.
“We recorded a fatal accident at Powerline Junction inward Aleje in Ikorodu; it involved a tipper that had a brake failure, three tricycles (Marwa), a Corolla car, and an MPV bus. Three lives were lost and several people sustained injuries”, LASTMA said in a statement.
Officials from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), the Nigerian Police, and LASTMA personnel were dispatched to the scene to provide emergency assistance. Traffic congestion extended beyond Sabo Roundabout, with counterflow measures implemented to ease movement. Traffic from Ikorodu Garage was also affected.
The crash comes just two days after another fatal incident at Ekoro Junction, Abule-Egba, where a tricycle operator died following a multi-vehicle collision involving a six-tyre trailer, a Honda Pilot, a Toyota Camry, and an unregistered tricycle. LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq explained that mechanical brake failure played a role in that accident as well.
“A fully loaded trailer developed a brake failure, crushing the tricycle before colliding with a Honda Pilot and eventually vaulting over the median to smash into a Toyota Camry and nearby property”, Taofiq said.
LASTMA officials rescued two trapped victims, cordoned off the scene, and took steps to prevent further accidents. Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations as emergency and recovery operations continue.
