In a major step towards modernizing Nigeria’s aviation sector, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the official launch of “Operation Go Cashless” a new digital payment initiative aimed at phasing out cash transactions at all airports nationwide.
The rollout begins with Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, with full implementation scheduled to take effect from September 29, 2025.
Developed in partnership with leading fintech company Paystack, the cashless system will cover all FAAN-managed revenue points including access gates, car parks, VIP lounges, and protocol services.
“This move reflects our commitment to safer, faster, and more transparent payment processes across Nigerian airports,” FAAN said in a statement on Friday.
With the transition, airport users will now be required to pay via contactless digital methods, eliminating the need for physical cash. The new system promises to enhance user experience, reduce queue times, and improve revenue tracking and accountability within airport operations.
To facilitate a smooth switch, trained brand ambassadors have been stationed at key airport locations in Lagos and Abuja. These personnel will assist travelers with onboarding, demonstrate how to use the payment systems, and answer frequently asked questions.
Additionally, FAAN has introduced the “Go Cashless Card”, which passengers can collect at any airport access gate. Once obtained, users are encouraged to activate and fund the card online by visiting www.gocashless.faan.gov.ng.
This initiative is part of FAAN’s broader strategy to bring Nigerian airports in line with international standards, adopting technology-driven solutions that prioritize security, convenience, and efficiency.
According to FAAN, reducing cash handling not only enhances transparency but also mitigates potential fraud risks and operational delays.
“Going cashless is more than just a payment upgrade, it’s about transforming our airports into smart, future-ready transport hubs,” the agency noted.
While Lagos and Abuja are the pilot locations, FAAN confirmed that the cashless policy will be extended to other airports across the country in phases.
