Benjamin Sesko struck once more from the bench as Manchester United climbed back to fourth in the Premier League with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Everton.
The 22-year-old Slovenian forward netted his third substitute goal of the season, finishing a slick second-half counter-attack to seal the points. No player has scored more off the bench in the league this campaign.
The decisive move began with a superb pass from Matheus Cunha to Bryan Mbeumo, with three of United’s summer signings combining at a crucial moment. Michael Carrick’s side had struggled to break down Everton before that breakthrough, lacking fluency against a home side desperate to end their poor run.
With rivals dropping points in the race for Champions League places, United had added incentive and showed resilience when it mattered most.
Everton responded positively after conceding but were denied repeatedly by goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who produced four saves and four clearances. His outstanding late stop to keep out Michael Keane ensured United secured their first away league clean sheet since March 2025.
Carrick praised his team’s defensive unity, admitting they were not at their best on the ball but highlighting their togetherness and discipline. He also backed Sesko’s development, describing the striker as a long-term asset making a significant impact from the bench.
Everton manager David Moyes admitted his side switched off for the decisive counter-attack, acknowledging United’s pace and clinical edge proved the difference in a tightly contested encounter.
