The European Union has agreed to gradually end all Russian gas imports by January 1, 2028, as part of efforts to curb Moscow’s energy revenues used to finance its war in Ukraine.
EU energy ministers meeting in Luxembourg on Monday approved the proposal, which sets a clear timeline for phasing out Russian energy supplies.
According to the Council of the European Union, the plan will see Russian gas imports under new contracts banned from January 2026, followed by an end to existing short-term contracts in June 2026. All long-term contracts will then be terminated by January 2028.
The bloc said the move underscores its determination to reduce dependence on Russian energy and strengthen Europe’s energy security amid ongoing tensions over the war in Ukraine.
