Artificial Intelligence (AI) featured prominently at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) International Week, where the European Union (EU) and Nigeria reaffirmed their commitment to advancing joint research and innovation.
Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Massimo De Luca, said both partners are finalising a Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Agreement to strengthen collaboration among researchers, universities, and enterprises.
“The agreement will open new possibilities for institutions and innovators to jointly explore responsible AI applications that address societal challenges and drive inclusive growth,” he said.
De Luca also highlighted the Generative AI for Africa call for proposals, closing October 31, as part of EU-funded initiatives promoting cross-continental collaboration in AI development.
He noted the EU’s continued engagement with Nigerian institutions, including work with the National Universities Commission and a new research contact point aimed at boosting local research capacity.
UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Folasade Ogunsola, welcomed the EU’s sustained collaboration with Nigerian universities, describing it as a model for mutually beneficial partnerships.
