A delegation from the European Union (EU) Elections Follow-Up Mission has met with the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters to discuss the ongoing review of Nigeria’s Electoral Amendment Bill.
The meeting, held in Abuja on Thursday, comes just days before the National Assembly resumes from recess.
Senator Simon Lalong, Chairman of the Joint National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters, confirmed that the Senate will consider the conference report on the bill once plenary resumes.
He described the proposed amendments as “a working document” that requires broad input from stakeholders to ensure a stronger, more credible electoral framework.
According to a statement by Lalong’s media adviser, Makut Macham, the EU delegation was led by Ralph Michael Peters (Team Leader and Political Analyst), alongside Eirini Gounari (Legal Expert) and Maros Gabriel (Election Expert). Barry Andrews, a Member of the European Parliament and Chief of Mission, is expected to join the delegation in early October.
Lalong noted that the joint committee has already held multiple sessions to deliberate on key issues and will continue consultations through a retreat and public hearing before finalizing the amendment.
He commended the EU for its consistent support of Nigeria’s democratic development, stressing that the committee is also engaging with INEC, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to produce reforms that strengthen transparency, accountability, and public trust in elections.
