Enyimba head coach, Lawrence Ukaegbu, has pointed to costly defensive mistakes as the main reason behind his side’s defeat to Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) reigning champions, Remo Stars, in their latest league encounter.
The People’s Elephant suffered a 2-1 loss to Remo Stars at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena on Sunday, in a match that proved decisive in terms of defensive discipline and game management at the back.
Former Enyimba striker, Victor Mbaoma came back to haunt his old club by scoring twice for Remo Stars, giving the home side a strong advantage. Enyimba’s only goal in the encounter was scored by Ezekiel Eddidiong, but his effort was not enough to prevent defeat.
Despite the result, Ukaegbu was full of praise for his players’ attitude and fighting spirit, insisting that the margin between both teams was largely down to avoidable errors rather than effort or desire.
“It was a good game but for the careless mistakes at the back. We have seen the errors and we will go home and correct them,” Ukaegbu stated in a post-match interview.
“They are not a bad side and they played well like we did, but the mistakes gave them the edge.”
The defeat leaves Enyimba reflecting on their defensive structure and execution as they look to tighten up at the back ahead of their next Nigeria Premier Football League fixture, with focus now shifting to better defensive organization, improved concentration, and stronger game management in upcoming matches.
