Nollywood actress and filmmaker Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde has revealed that the #EndSARS protests marked a turning point in her approach to activism, following death threats directed at her children.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Rubbin’ Minds, the veteran actress said the experience forced her to reassess the risks associated with public protests and prioritise the safety of her family.
Omotola explained that she had previously grown accustomed to threats against herself due to her outspoken nature. However, the situation escalated during the EndSARS movement when her children also became targets.
According to her, the threats were more intense than anything she had encountered before. She said the moment her children began receiving death threats, the reality of the danger became clear.
The actress recalled that people reportedly came looking for her at both her home and workplace during the protests, a development that heightened her concern and prompted deeper reflection.
She said the experience made her realise that activism was no longer just about personal courage but also about responsibility to those around her, especially her children.
As a result, Omotola said she shifted away from street demonstrations to more strategic and targeted forms of advocacy that reduce personal exposure while still addressing critical social issues.
The actress stressed that while she remains unconcerned about her own safety, her focus has changed to protecting her children, noting that she cannot always control where they go or shield them from harm.
The #EndSARS protests, which began in October 2020, were driven by widespread calls to end police brutality and alleged abuses by Nigeria’s now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). The movement drew national and international attention, as well as participation from several public figures, including Omotola.
