Former Commonwealth Secretary-General, Emeka Anyaoku, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Dr Christopher Kolade, whom he described as an “Iroko” among Nigeria’s dwindling forest of public servants renowned for integrity and ethical leadership.
In a heartfelt tribute shared with ARISE News from London, Anyaoku reflected on Kolade’s remarkable contributions to both public service and the private sector, noting that the late statesman embodied values of honour, professionalism, and moral excellence that are rare in today’s Nigeria.
“Alas, the country has lost an Iroko in its limited forest of public servants with impeccable integrity and ethical leaders in its corporate world,” he wrote.
Dr Kolade, widely respected for his distinguished career, first made his mark in broadcasting as one of the leading figures in Nigeria’s public service. He later rose to prominence in the corporate world, guiding Cadbury Nigeria Plc as Chief Executive Officer and subsequently as Chairman, leaving an enduring legacy of excellence and discipline.
Anyaoku also recalled Kolade’s service as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, describing his diplomatic tenure as one of grace and distinction. Beyond professional admiration, the statesman shared a personal bond with Kolade, fondly remembering their light-hearted exchanges about their closely aligned birthdays.
“Christopher and I often bantered about the three weeks between his and my birthdays, thereby entitling him to claim the privileges applicable to age seniority in our age-conscious society,” Anyaoku reminisced.
He extended heartfelt condolences to Kolade’s widow, Beatrice, and the entire family, praying that God would grant them strength in this period of loss.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” Anyaoku concluded.
Dr Christopher Kolade, often celebrated as a man of integrity and intellect, leaves behind an inspiring legacy of service, leadership, and moral uprightness that continues to resonate across generations.
