Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has strongly denied reports linking him to terrorism financing, describing the allegation as false, malicious, and deliberately orchestrated to tarnish his reputation.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Emefiele said the publication, which listed him among alleged financiers of terrorism in Nigeria, was “entirely fabricated, baseless, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public”.
He said at no time in his public or private life had he engaged in any activity connected to terrorism or its financing and dismissed the report as a reckless attempt to damage his name.
“The fight against terrorism is too important to be trivialised by irresponsible reporting. Throughout my service to the nation, I have never been involved in anything remotely linked to terrorism”, he said.
Emefiele added that he had never been invited, questioned, or investigated by any security agency over allegations of terrorism financing, noting that he had never met or interacted with the individual cited in the publication.
He urged Nigerians to disregard the report in its entirety and cautioned the media against spreading unverified claims capable of stoking fear and confusion.
“I insist that the allegation is pure mischief crafted by misguided elements. I urge the press to refrain from publishing sensational falsehoods without evidence or due diligence”, he stated.
Emefiele said he remained committed to clearing his name and ensuring that the truth prevails.
