Concerns have been raised over reports that the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) imported highly toxic thallium sulphate into Nigeria, prompting former Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to seek clarification.
In a letter dated January 30 and addressed to National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, El-Rufai requested detailed information regarding the reported purchase of approximately 10 kilograms of the chemical from a supplier in Poland. He shared a copy of the letter on his X page on Sunday.
“Given the extreme toxicity of thallium salts and their strict regulation, it is essential for public safety, accountability, and trust that these details are clarified”, El-Rufai wrote.
The former governor asked for information on the intended purpose of the import, the supplier, the legal permits under which it was procured, the quantity and concentration, and the storage and security arrangements. He also sought clarification on regulatory oversight involving agencies such as NAFDAC and NCDC, and whether public-health risk assessments or hazard-mitigation plans had been put in place.
El-Rufai emphasized that the inquiry is made in good faith to ensure compliance with due processes and safety standards, noting that transparency would help build public confidence in national institutions.
The NSA has not yet responded to the letter, and Ribadu could not be reached for immediate comment.
This statement comes shortly after El-Rufai alleged that his phone has been tapped, claiming that the NSA’s office has been monitoring his calls.
