At least eight people are feared dead after suspected terrorists detonated explosives on a key bridge in Niger State, destroying a major transport link connecting several communities in Borgu Local Government Area.
Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the attack targeted the bridge along Luma Road, a strategic route linking Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities, and a major access point to the popular Babanna border market, which attracts heavy commercial activity every Monday.
According to police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun, the incident was reported at about 6:30 a.m. on Monday, March 23, 2026, although preliminary findings suggest the explosion occurred around 2:00 a.m.
Security sources said the attackers, believed to have emerged from nearby forest hideouts, planted explosive devices beneath the bridge before detonating them, causing extensive structural damage.
Authorities suspect the sabotage was intended to disrupt security operations and restrict movement within the border communities, where security forces have recently intensified surveillance against armed groups.
Police said a clearance and monitoring operation is currently underway, with security personnel deployed to secure the area and prevent further attacks.
The destruction of the bridge has left residents stranded and disrupted economic activities across surrounding communities, particularly traders and commuters who rely on the route for access to nearby markets and neighbouring settlements.
The incident adds to growing security concerns in parts of Niger State, where attacks on infrastructure and rural communities have increasingly threatened local livelihoods and mobility.
