Following a petition by the Enugu State Government over an unexecuted smart schools contract, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered and returned more than ₦1.2 billion to the state.
The funds were recovered from Sujimoto Luxury Construction Limited and its Group Managing Director, Olasijibomi Ogundele, as part of payments made for the construction of 22 smart schools across Enugu State.
The EFCC said the recovery followed a petition dated February 11, 2025, in which the state government alleged that the contractor failed to execute the project despite receiving over ₦2.28 billion in advance payments. The project was scheduled for completion on January 2, 2025.
According to the petition, the failure to deliver the schools amounted to a breach of contract, with Ogundele identified as jointly liable for the refund of the funds.
A total of ₦1,234,350,000 was recovered and handed over to the state on Wednesday, following investigations by the EFCC’s Enugu Zonal Directorate
EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, represented by the Enugu Zonal Director, CE Daniel Isei, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to recovering public funds and warned contractors to comply with the Procurement Act.
He added that the EFCC would continue to investigate the matter and pursue prosecution where criminal conduct is established.
