Over 13,000 Band A customers to benefit under NERC’s Meter Acquisition Fund Programme…
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) has launched the second phase of its free prepaid meter distribution exercise, under the “Tranche B” of the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) metering programme, as part of efforts to bridge Nigeria’s metering gap and end estimated billing.
The initiative, established by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), is designed to provide prepaid meters to electricity consumers nationwide at no cost, thereby promoting transparency and accuracy in billing.
EEDC, which distributes electricity across the South-East region covering Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi States announced the commencement of the new phase in a statement issued on Tuesday by its Group Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh.
According to Ezeh, Tranche B targets unmetered customers connected to Band “A” feeders, who enjoy the most stable power supply within EEDC’s network.
“These meters and their installation are completely free, and customers are advised not to make any payment to installers or offer any form of inducement,” Ezeh cautioned. “This exercise reinforces our commitment to service transparency and customer satisfaction.”
He added that EEDC began the rollout on November 2, 2025, with a Know Your Customer (KYC) validation exercise, and that 13,335 customers are expected to benefit from this phase.
Ezeh also highlighted that EEDC successfully completed Tranche A of the programme earlier in the year, during which 13,614 Band “A” customers were metered. Once all customers under Band “A” are covered, the company plans to extend the exercise to Band “B” customers, as part of a structured approach to achieving full metering across its network.
He encouraged customers to update their contact information at the company’s Customer Service Units to ensure they are properly captured for the exercise.
Ezeh further advised customers to refrain from meter bypass, energy theft, or other illegal practices, urging them instead to report any suspicious activities to EEDC through its call centre via 0208 470 0100 or WhatsApp numbers 0707 461 0095 and 0707 461 0088.
He noted that another initiative the Distribution Sector Recovery Project (DSRP) is also underway to complement the metering drive and ensure broader customer coverage in subsequent phases.
The Meter Acquisition Fund is a pooled financing mechanism contributed by all electricity distribution companies (DisCos) nationwide, managed under NERC’s supervision, and dedicated to procuring prepaid meters for free deployment to customers.
