The Federal Ministry of Education has dismissed false reports circulating in some media outlets suggesting that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is no longer required for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
In a statement issued on X on Thursday by the Ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Boriowo Folasade, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, described the reports as “false, baseless, and misleading.”
Dr Alausa clarified that at no time did the Ministry issue or authorise any statement implying that JAMB had been scrapped or that its role in tertiary admissions had changed.
“For the avoidance of doubt, JAMB remains the statutory and legally empowered body responsible for conducting entrance examinations and coordinating admissions into all tertiary institutions in Nigeria,” the Minister said.
He reaffirmed that the admission processes overseen by JAMB remain fully operational and that any contrary claims should be disregarded.
The Minister also cautioned members of the public, particularly prospective students, parents, and tertiary institutions, to rely only on verified information from official communication channels of the Ministry and JAMB regarding admission procedures.
Dr Alausa restated the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with JAMB and other relevant agencies to ensure transparency, fairness, and credibility in Nigeria’s tertiary education admission system.
He added that the Federal Ministry of Education “remains committed to protecting the integrity of the admission process and ensuring that merit and due process guide all admissions into higher institutions.”
The statement further urged media organisations, bloggers, and online platforms to verify information from official sources before publication to avoid spreading misinformation capable of causing confusion in the education sector.
The Ministry reiterated that there has been no change in JAMB’s established role, describing the agency as “central and indispensable” to Nigeria’s tertiary education framework. It encouraged the public to visit the official websites and verified social media handles of both the Ministry and JAMB for accurate updates on education-related matters.
