The Edo State Government has sanctioned a fortnight of exclusive training camp for designated competitors and technical staff in anticipation of the second Niger Delta Games, which Benin City will host from February 20 to 27.
Bright Idahosa, Secretary of the Edo State Liaison Committee for the Games, confirmed the developmental program on Wednesday as the state launched comprehensive trials to identify its representatives for the regional event. This residential camp will commence this Sunday, focusing on elevating performance levels and perfecting tactical strategies before the opening ceremony.
To ensure a high standard of competition, officials will only recruit elite performers who meet the strict under-20 age requirement to join Team Edo. These selection trials, currently underway across all 18 local government areas, encompass every one of the 17 sporting disciplines featured in the festival’s lineup. Amadin Enabulele, the Executive Chairman of the Edo Sports Commission, has issued a firm directive requiring the total completion of these talent assessments by this Friday to allow for a seamless transition into the camping phase.
The state remains committed to a transparent selection process, deploying technical experts and liaison committee members to oversee the local government trials. This rigorous scouting effort aims to assemble a formidable squad capable of defending home turf against visiting delegations. Sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and managed by Dunamis-Icon Limited, the multisport event will bring together youth talent from the nine constituent states of the Niger Delta region.
Stressing the state’s readiness and the importance of the selection timeline, Bright Idahosa provided the following update:
“Edo is set for the final stage of preparation for the Niger Delta Games and to host other states in the region. All participating sports associations must complete the trials as directed.”
