Security operatives denied journalists access to the Edo State High (Criminal) Court II on Monday, during the arraignment of 52 individuals arrested in connection with last Saturday’s violent protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
The suspects were transported to the court in a Black Maria van and brought before the judge through an ex parte motion filed by the police counsel, P. O. Odion. Armed security personnel maintained a heavy presence at the court premises and instructed journalists that only legal practitioners would be allowed inside the courtroom.
Presiding Judge William Aziegbemi declined jurisdiction over the case, ordering that the suspects be remanded at the Ubiaja Correctional Centre. He adjourned the matter to February 26, 2026, and directed defence counsel to file bail applications at the Ubiaja High Court.
Following the proceedings, defence lawyers rejected the charges brought against the suspects, which include malicious damage and armed robbery.
Barrister Wisdom Isaac described the charges as unfounded, noting that no formal complaints had been lodged against the defendants. Another counsel, Ejemi Etinbowei, argued that the protest was initiated by the family of a kidnapped victim and later drew other residents into the demonstration. He insisted that students were not responsible for organising the protest.
Outside the courtroom, parents and relatives were visibly distressed. Several suspects claimed they were arrested at their homes late Saturday night or early Sunday morning and taken directly to the Edo State Police Headquarters in Benin.
